What is bilaxten used for?
Generally, bilaxten is used as anti-allergy medication to help in diseases like allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, hay fever and urticaria. When there is an exposure to susceptible substances such as pollen, house dust mites, dander, smoke and air pollutants, the lining at your nasal mucosa will produce a chemical called histamine which triggers an immune and inflammatory response manifested as signs and symptoms of allergies.
In allergic rhinitis, you might experience runny nose, nasal itchiness and sneezing while in allergic conjunctivitis, you will have watery and itchy eyes, These are the symptoms caused by the release of histamine into the bloodstream.
Apart from that, bilastine also helps in relieving urticaria. Urticaria is a condition when your skin starts to develop itchy rashes. Similar to allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, these itchy rashes develop due to exposure to triggers like soap, detergents or hard and rough fabric clothes.
From the above explanation, it is clear that bilaxten is widely used in the clinical practice to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis and urticaria in both children and adults.
Dosage of bilaxten in children and adults
For adults aged more than 12 years old, the dosage recommended by doctors is 1 tablet taken once daily. Usually, bilaxten is available in a tablet form with a strength of 20 mg. You should take your medications on an empty stomach. This means that you have to take bilaxten an hour before your meal or wait about 2 hours after your meal. This is because food in your stomach makes the absorption of bilaxten lesser thus reducing the effectiveness of the medicine. Also try avoiding drinking fruit juices especially grape juices as it can also affect the absorption of bilaxten.
Meanwhile, for children, it is advisable to get opinion from doctors before giving bilaxten to children as the dosage for children has not been established.
In any cases of overdosage, do call or visit your local emergency clinics or hospitals to get treated immediately.
If you ever missed a dose for the day, quickly take the missed dose (make sure you take it when your stomach is empty) unless the timing is almost near to your next dose, you can skip the missed dose and take the next dose as usual in the schedule. Do not ever take double doses in cases of missed or skipped doses.
Always read the printed manufacturer’s information or label at the medication pack to get extra information on the safety of bilaxten before consuming them.
