Hearing the word, summer, all of us conjure different images in our minds. The long break from school, going on vacations, and long days of sunshine cause us to reminisce about summers of our past. But there are plenty of outdoor summer activities everyone can participate in regardless of our age. Continue reading to learn more about our favorite outdoor summer activities.

Few other words are more intricately connected to summer and outdoors than water. Whether it is a trip to the beach, time in a backyard pool, or paddling on top of the water, summer and water are one and the same.

  • The Beach

A day at the beach is rejuvenating. There are so many activities to engage in while spending time on the sand and in the water. Grabbing a book that you have been meaning to read all winter is a great way to relax and slip off into another world. Building the castle of your dreams or a sculpture in the sand is something we never outgrow.

Whether you are going to swim or float on a raft, time in and on the water is the best way to cool off from the summer sun. Games are more fun at the beach. Be sure you pack a frisbee, paddle ball set, and a deck of cards along with your sunblock. Before you head home, take a stroll along the water’s edge. Just inhale the clean air and nature you are immersed in.

  • Pool Time

Learn more about pool options in and near your town. Many towns have municipal pools that you and your family can use throughout the summer months. Town or neighborhood pools are a great way to meet people you live near. Pool games are entertaining and a great way to practice your swimming skills. Races from one end of the pool to the other are competitive fun for all ages. Setting up relay teams encourages even more people to participate.

Time in the pool is not complete without a session or two of Marco Polo. Jumping or diving in for glow sticks adds to evening enjoyment at the pool. When it is time to relax, hop on your favorite float and let all your cares drift away.

  • Paddling

Kayaks, canoes, and/or paddle boards often have many options of ways to enjoy summer and explore waterways near you. Canoes and kayaks can offer some peace and solitude from the hectic fun of summer. They are great means of transportation to travel around lakes, rivers, and ponds. You will notice details about inlets and water life that you have not seen before. Pack a lunch and stop on an island out in the middle of the lake; you get to experience another treat of summer – eating outside!

If you are looking for a bit more exercise, paddleboarding is a great choice. You can paddle in any type of water. This is a great way to strengthen your core muscles and alleviate the stress on your body from sitting during the colder months.

Another option to combine with paddling is fishing. Learn more about any local regulations for any permits that are needed.
