MLA Title Page: How To Organize It

The organizing of academic papers in the MLA style can be challenging, as you should know at least the basic rules of the MLA format before you begin to write. Like with other academic paper styles, the MLA title page should be organized according to specific requirements. This page is aimed to provide general information about your piece of writing: your personal info, the title of the course, and the instructor’s name.

Key elements of the MLA title page

The MLA style usually does not require a specific title page. It means that your first page should include all the important information. Here are several simple rules you ought to follow:

  1. Don’t create a separate title page if you aren’t asked to do this by your instructor.
  2. Your name, your instructor’s name, the title of the course, and the date should be placed in the top left corner of the page.
  3. Type the title of your paper in the center of your page. Leave it as it is: don’t use italics, underlining, or quote marks to highlight the title. Use Title Case.
  4. If you are citing other works in the title of your paper, follow the rules as you would do in the text. Use italics or quotation marks where it is necessary.
  5. Then start writing your text as usual. Don’t forget to double space before typing the first sentence of your paper.
  6. There should be a header in the top right corner of the pages. It includes your surname and a page number.

You should remember that the MLA first page can look differently in different papers. Some lectures may ask students to compose a separate title page, although it isn’t common. Others prefer their students not to use the header on the first page. Always read your guidelines carefully before writing your assignment.

Organizing your title page in MLA can be tricky but in fact, it isn’t so hard as some people might think. If you know the rules of the MLA format, organizing the first page of your academic paper won’t be a problem.
