Vanguard – [van-gahrd]
1. the forefront in any movement, field, activity, or the like.
2. the leaders of any intellectual or political movement.

We set out to create this website and podcast with a team of people who each share a passion for the community. With so many people doing so many good things to grow the Eve player base and support others both in and out of the game, I’ve decided to take the next step in community support.

With that said, the scope of what I really envisioned for The Neocom far out measures the abilities of our team even if it was double its size. There’s just no way to fully encompass the sphere of the diversity, character, and spirit of our beloved group of space nerds. For example, a couple of weeks before the launch of EveMeet.net, I was trying to promote certain meetups to get them at least a little bit of exposure. With so many, I was forced to prioritize by larger venues, free time I had available to do it, and recruiting a team all whilst having to keep my promise to Kira to get the podcast running. Mind you, I was trying to do all this driving cross country 10+ hours a day as an over-the-road truck driver. Then, when EveMeet.net launched, the first thought that I had was how much I just fell in love with Bam and Ariel.

taylor-swift-bmi-awards2010People stepping up and being leaders need to be recognized. Since we are a community of close-knit ties, it’s rather unfair to call upon CCP to do all of the “spotlighting” and “rewarding” for the effort of those who choose to lead. As the leaders of the community step up to sacrifice their time and effort, we in the community should support them. Although we can’t always do this monetarily, we can do it through symbols of appreciation and recognition.

In this spirit, I would like to announce a proposal:

The Eve Community Vanguard Awards

I’ll admit, I kinda dropped this on my team like a lead brick. Basically saying, “We’re doing this. I’m paying for the trophies out of my pocket and I think this is important.” For this breakout first year, I am proposing just two awards from two categories (because these aren’t cheap trophies):

  • Player or Group Community Leadership
  • CCP Employee or Team Community Support

For this first year, the nominees are going to be chosen by our staff here at The Neocom with winners chosen by poll. Each poll will be up for about two weeks. You can vote once per week. In the future, I would like to see this idea expand throughout interested members of the Eve media – suggestions for categories, nominees, shortlisting the results, and establishing a judged panel.

The first of these community awards will be presented at Eve Vegas in October. I haven’t worked out the details yet as to exactly when and where, but I’ll keep everyone posted. If you would be interested in participating, please get in touch with us at NeocomPodcast@gmail.com or send me a direct message on Twitter or Tweetfleet Slack. Thank you to those that have voted and let’s spread the word to make this a true gift from us to those who deserve recognition.
